What a Music Foundations Class Looks Like for Ages 3–5

A first music class at three or four looks very different from a piano lesson for an older child. There is no long sitting at an instrument and no homework sheet. Young children learn music through movement, listening and short, joyful activities matched to their stage, so the class moves from one short activity to the next before attention drifts.

It is normal for a child to watch quietly for the first few minutes before joining in; many young children warm up once the music starts. Our first trial class is a real class, so you see the same kind of session your child would join every week.

Music Foundations is play-based: rhythm, listening, movement and coordination, with early keyboard exploration. These are the building blocks of every instrument a child may choose later.

• Rhythm: feeling and keeping a steady beat, which later makes reading and playing music much easier.
• Listening: noticing loud and soft, fast and slow, high and low, and responding to what they hear.
• Movement and coordination: using the whole body to feel music before the fingers are asked to do fine, careful work.

Montessori education starts from the child's stage of development: hands-on experiences, time to explore, and the chance to do things independently. Our teaching for the early years is Montessori-aligned, so children aged 3 to 5 learn through play and movement rather than a formal lesson.

Three to five year olds need a teacher close by: someone who notices when a child has lost the beat, needs a quick demonstration again, or is ready for a slightly harder game. In a large group, the quiet children get missed. Our batches have at most 6 children, so every child gets attention, and they still enjoy the energy of making music with others.

Parents get a weekly progress report. It covers this week's focus, what went well, what to practise at home, and the next milestone. Home practice at this age is short and clear: a song to sing together or a rhythm to clap, not a long session at the keyboard.
